This site tells readers to test rather than take advice. That applies here first.

Three kinds of source

Studio practice. What goes wrong at this bench, on paper we have used, over years of workshops. Marked as experience, not as measurement — it is one studio, in one climate, with one water supply. Published material on paper sizing, ink behaviour and nib geometry. Cited as general, and it is where the physical explanations come from.

Supplier material, which describes products and is written to sell them. Used for mechanics and not for judgements, and labelled where it appears.

What was not done

Nothing here was tested under controlled conditions.

No matched sets of paper, no measured humidity, no side-by-side trials with the variables held. That limit has a page of its own, and it is why every fault page ends in a test you run rather than a product we name.

The test comes first

Every material page gives a test before it gives a recommendation.

Four marks on a sheet of paper. Five checks on a new bottle of ink. All free, all done with what you already have, and several of them conclude that nothing needs buying.

That ordering is deliberate. A studio that sells supplies has an interest in the answer being a purchase, and putting the free test first is the guard.

No brands

No product is named on this site, ours included.

Formulations change, product lines are discontinued, and availability differs by country. Properties do not change — a sheet either holds a crisp edge or it does not — so the pages describe properties and the test transfers to any shop.

Faults, not rules

The fault pages describe causes in order of likelihood, and say plainly which are material and which are time.

Where a cause is time, no product is offered for it. Pressure, angle, speed and letterform are named as time every place they appear.

Corrections

Bench evidence outranks anything written here. Send what you did, on what paper, with what result, and the page changes.
