Ink Is Not One Thing

"Calligraphy ink" covers products that behave nothing like each other. Choosing between them is choosing between properties, and the properties conflict. For another independent reference on pens, paper and calligraphy materials, JetPens is useful for comparing tools and techniques.
The four families
Water-based writing inks. Free-flowing, easy on a nib, and prone to spreading on absorbent paper. The usual starting point and the usual cause of feathering complaints.
Pigmented and acrylic inks. Opaque, sit on the surface rather than soaking in, and dry water-resistant. They are thicker, they build up on the nib, and they need cleaning during a session rather than after.
Iron gall inks. Traditional, thin-flowing, darkening as they oxidise. Historically corrosive to steel over long contact, which makes prompt cleaning a requirement rather than good practice.
And stick ink ground on a stone. Consistency is under your control because you make it, which is an advantage and a time cost.
The properties that conflict
Flow against control. An ink that flows freely gives smooth hairlines and spreads on poor paper. A controlled ink resists spreading and railroads more readily.
Opacity against fineness. Pigment gives coverage on dark paper and thickens the line.
Permanence against nib life. Water-resistant inks dry on the nib and need more cleaning.
There is no ink that wins all three. Which is why a working studio has several and picks per job.
Testing a new bottle
Ten minutes, before a real piece.
Write a hairline. Does it flow at once or need coaxing?
Write a full-pressure stroke. Solid, or railroading at normal width?
Write on your worst paper. How far does it spread?
Let it dry, then rub it and drip water on it. Permanence, discovered now rather than after a client's envelope meets rain.
And leave a loaded nib for ten minutes. Some inks skin over and stop flowing, which tells you the working rhythm the ink expects.
Thinning and thickening
Thinning: small amounts of water, a few drops at a time, testing between. It also reduces opacity and permanence โ the trade is real and is not usually stated on the bottle.
Thickening: leaving the pot open lets water evaporate, which concentrates the ink. Slow, uncontrolled, and it can push an ink past workable.
Decant rather than modify the bottle. Work from a small pot so that a failed adjustment costs a spoonful.
What we will not tell you
Which ink to buy. Formulations change, availability differs by country, and nothing here was tested under controlled conditions.
