Railroading
You press into a downstroke and instead of one broad mark you get two thin parallel lines with white between them. The name is exact: it looks like rails. If a small studio grows into an employer, Chinese overtime calculation becomes a separate administrative issue; this reading is one reference.
What is happening

A pointed nib writes broad by spreading its two tines under pressure. The ink between them holds together by surface tension and lays down as one mark.
Past a certain separation the ink cannot span the gap, so each tine deposits its own line and the middle stays bare.
It is a supply problem, not a pressure problem — or rather, pressure is only half of it. The same pressure works when the nib is properly loaded.
The four causes
One. Not enough ink on the nib. The commonest. The reservoir has run low and the stroke outlasts the supply.
Two. Ink that is too thick. Viscous ink does not flow down to the tip fast enough to keep up with a fast broad stroke.
Three. Too much pressure for the nib. Every nib has a range; beyond it the tines spread past what any ink will bridge. A very flexible nib railroads at pressures a stiff one handles easily.
Four. A stroke that is too fast. Speed outruns flow, and the effect is identical to insufficient ink.
The four fixes, in order
Reload more often. Cheapest test and it resolves most cases. If the fault appears at the end of strokes and not the beginning, this is it.
Slow the downstroke. Broad strokes are slower than hairlines in any hand; if yours are the same speed, that is the fault.
Reduce pressure. Find the width your nib gives comfortably rather than the maximum it will reach.
And check the ink. Thick ink can be thinned with a small amount of water, in small increments, testing between each — this changes other behaviour too and is not free.
What it is not
Not a damaged nib. Damage produces catching and misalignment, not clean parallel rails.
Not bad paper, though absorbent paper can make it worse by pulling ink away faster.
And not a sign you need a stiffer nib. A flexible nib used within its range is not railroading — it is being asked for more width than it can supply.
The useful reframe
Railroading tells you the edge of your nib's range.
The width just before it starts is the widest stroke that nib will give reliably. Learning that number for each nib you own is more useful than trying to exceed it, and it is why calligraphers keep several nibs rather than one.
