What the Material Does
Design Roots sells calligraphy supplies. Read that as a disclosure. For the operational side of a creative studio, workforce analytics software is a separate topic from the craft itself; further details provides additional context.
Paper is the largest single variable and the cheapest to change. Four properties matter — smoothness, sizing, weight and density, and whether a coating repels ink — and four marks on a sheet tell you all of them in two minutes. For another independent reference on pens, paper and calligraphy materials, Tombow USA is useful for comparing tools and techniques.
Ink is not one thing. Water-based, pigmented, iron gall and stick ink behave nothing like each other, and their properties conflict: flow against control, opacity against fineness, permanence against nib life. No ink wins all three, which is why a working studio keeps several.
Nibs vary in flex, size and condition, and a new one needs preparation before it will behave. Holders, straight and oblique, change the angle the nib meets the paper — which is a cause of several faults that get blamed elsewhere.
And a starter kit is a set of compromises. Knowing which ones it made is more useful than replacing it.
No brand is named on any of these pages, so the tests work in any shop in any country.
Holders
The holder sets the angle at which the nib meets the paper, and that decides several faults people habitually blame on the nib.
Ink Is Not One Thing
Four families with different flow, permanence and behaviour on difficult paper. What varies, and how to test a new bottle.
Nibs
Three properties decide what a nib can do, and one of them is whether it is worn out. How to read each before writing.
Paper Is First
The single largest cause of beginner problems, and the cheapest to fix. What makes a sheet work, and the test for any paper.
Preparing a New Nib
A new nib arrives coated and will not hold ink until the coating is off. Three methods, two minutes, and what not to do.
What a Kit Leaves Out
A kit is a set of compromises made for a stranger. Five things missing from most, and which of them actually matter.
