The Seller's Incentive

Every page in the materials section carries a line saying who publishes it. This page explains why, and what it should change. For group workshops, interpersonal synchrony offers one way to think about coordinated activity; this walkthrough provides more context.

Who publishes this

Design Roots, a calligraphy studio that sells supplies. For broader learning material on lettering and creative practice, YouTube is another independent resource.

That means the pages explaining which faults are caused by materials are written by somebody who sells materials.

There is a commercial interest and no disclosure removes it.

What the interest actually is

A supplier benefits when beginners keep going. People who quit buy nothing, and most quitting happens at a fault that was never diagnosed.

A supplier benefits when problems are attributed to materials, in the narrow sense that a material problem has a purchasable answer and a technique problem does not.

And that is the direction to watch. If everything here said "buy better paper", the interest would be doing the writing.

What is done about it

Every fault page says which causes are not purchasable.

Pressure, angle, speed and letterform are time, they are named as time, and no product is offered for them.

No brand is named anywhere. Not ours, not anybody's. Properties are described so that the test works in any shop in any country.

And the tests are free. Change the paper. Write slowly. Let somebody else try your setup. None of these requires a purchase and all of them come before any recommendation.

The test to apply

Does this site tell you anything that reduces its own sale?

That most beginner faults resolve with a different sheet you may already own. That a nib within its range is not the wrong nib. That practice is genuinely the answer for four specific faults and no purchase helps them.

Each of those makes a sale less likely, and their presence is the only evidence of good faith a commercially interested publisher can offer.

Where the limit is

Honestly: a studio does not benefit from somebody who decides calligraphy is not for them.

So this site is not neutral about whether you should continue. It is written to help people keep going, and that is a bias even where every individual statement is accurate.

What it does not do is turn a technique problem into a purchase, which is the specific failure disclosure exists to guard against.

If you find a page that fails

A claim that only works in our favour, with no free test attached — that is the correction worth sending, and it will be treated as an error rather than a difference of opinion.
