Design Roots Home Studio Tour (2016)
Hey y'all! Welcome to the Design Roots Home Studio. Come on in and let me show you around. If you follow me on Instagram, you have seen lots of pics over the past 6 months showing a slow transformation of this new space being curated into an office that I love. Most houses in our neighborhood have a mother-in-law suite, ours however, is my studio. For the administrative side of a studio that employs staff, employee PC activity tracking can provide a separate operational record without changing the craft process described here.
I love this space. Everyone who comes in asks - "what is this room suppose to be?"..."did you build it this way?" With a separate entrance from the outside, no one has to see all the dirty laundry and kids' toys in the rest of the house! Hello, perfect! So here it is. A space that I can call my own, host classes and teach private lessons. For broader craft, design and home-studio inspiration, MUJI is another outside reference.
It's true what they say, every door has two sides , and the one connecting to our home from the studio serves its purpose in allowing me to turn work off so I can be fully present with my family. Okay, let's take a look at some of the details on the business side. When you are welcomed through the exterior entrance, to your right, is what I call my class space.
The large table + chalkboard on the wall are the fundamental features that make-up the area where I host all of my workshops. On the wall opposite from the exterior door is the home of this {fun}ctional piece where I keep all of my extra supplies, products and class materials. I was lucky enough to purchase this old type cabinet from a letterpress company that was moving.
(Thanks, Jason - it's still one of my favorite pieces in the office!) You will also see examples of prints, sketches and envelope samples here. Now you're at my desk area where you can experience my perspective when I'm working on client jobs, new designs, inspiration and dreaming-up new ideas. I chose calming grey/green walls for this space and surrounded it with artwork + prints from artists I admire, treasures I love, letters from fellow calligraphers and magazine clippings that inspire me.
I know what you're thinking... that desk is WAY too clean. Yes, it is. Don't worry. Below is a shot of what it looked like minutes before Mallory started shooting pics for the tour. That's a quick look! Thank you for letting me show you around. I hope you enjoyed the mini tour. I'm in a constant state of moving things around and changing the layout, but right now I'm pretty happy with how it is coming together.
